Note from the artist upon completion of the painting in 1999:
“This is a painting of my father, Arthur Aebi, and his twin brother, William Aebi Druber (my Uncle Bill), born February 2, 1893. They were placed in an orphanage as very young boys when their father died, and separated shortly thereafter when William was adopted. The Duber Family wanted just one boy, and both William and Arthur were being considered. They were both hiding under the bed, and the decision was made when William was the first to come out when enticed by a banana. The boys never saw each other again until the day they met accidentally in an ice cream parlor in downtown Louisville when they were sixteen. After that, they often met in the Louisville Library and remained close the rest of their lives.”
“Dad was an avid photographer, and set up the photo of them playing their instruments during the time both were serving in World War I. I painted this based on the photo because it showed the spirit of both brothers and their love of playing music.”
